In this meeting we will look more closely at how we’d use the space, and hopefully make progress in defining exactly how many square feet we will be using.

The meeting will start at 3:30p.m. at the Melonhead Cafe, 2801 Dauphine Street (at Saint Ferdinand Street), in Faubourg Marigny.

The Greater New Orleans Community Data Center (GNOCDC) have released a new set of data and maps capturing the effect of Hurricane Katrina on the city, and tracking the recovery effort so far. Some of the new topics, as described in their press release:

  • What was the extent of the flooding?

  • How many citizens are returning and to what parts of town?

  • Where are the zip code boundaries?

  • Where did we all go? Where have former New Orleans residents evacuated?

  • What’s the elevation of different neighborhoods?

  • Where are there concentrations of historic housing outside the protection of federal historic districts?

  • What neighborhoods had the highest percent of households without cars to evacuate in?

  • What progress is being made in rebuilding New Orleans?

We’ve posted announcements about GNOCDC data before: they provide a fascinating view of New Orleans demographics in multiple formats including graphic maps. The Greater New Orleans Community Data Center is a product of Nonprofit Knowledge Works and is supported in part by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Technology Opportunities Program. They provide a wonderful source of information for grant-seeking area nonprofits.

Many people and organizations have asked for a way to make donations to the New Orleans Food Co-op through our website – and it’s finally possible. For more information, please see the Support the NOFC page.

There will be a special board meeting at 6pm, at 1203 Ursulines Avenue. The purpose of this meeting will be to have an official board vote whether or not to move forward with co-locating at the Melonhead Cafe. Leenie is researching the option of having a conference call for out of town board members. Board members please respond and let us know if you can attend this meeting or who you would like your proxy to be.

In the last few weeks the NOFC has put considerable energy towards quickly opening a small storefront. We now have an opportunity to place a store in the Melonhead Cafe in Marigny, and need to quickly reach a decision.

Any storefront could help us grow and plan and learn more than just running a buying club. At least that is the opinion of myself and some others.

Several members have met with the owner of the Melonhead Cafe in Marigny and the owner of the space they occupy. We have introduced the possibility of using some of their space for running our first storefront. Pharon of Melonhead and Adam, the building owner, were very receptive to this idea.

The amount of space available to us is yet to be determined. Please see the calendar section of this website for upcoming meetings on this topic. And please try to attend a meeting – the more input we have, the better a decision we can make.

I’ve taken a few pictures of the outside of the Melonhead Cafe and also scanned in two floorplan drawings provided by the owner. Hopefully these will help you get a feel for the space we are talking about. The pictures are on my personal picture gallery; there is also a map showing the location of the Melonhead Cafe.

I will try to pull together a better floorplan with Melonhead’s counter and tables arranged as soon as I get this information.
